Say it ain’t snow!
Some people may welcome Metro Detroit’s first sighting of snow, while others may prefer it to wait. The forecast calls for periods of wet snow on Wednesday night and Thursday.
It will be a rainy and windy Wednesday afternoon and evening. After highs in the 50s during the early afternoon, temperatures will tumble into the lower 40s by early evening. Westerly winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph.
Some communities will start to see a few wet snowflakes mixed with the rain after sunset, particularly in the Thumb. As temperatures fall into the 30s across Southeast Michigan.
Southeast Michigan will see a transition to snow showers around 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Thursday. Overnight lows will be in the lower 30s. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph. Gusts will be up to 25 mph.
While air temperatures will be cold enough to support snow early Thursday, the roads will be warm enough to melt it in most spots. Overpasses and other bridges cool faster than surface streets and freeways. This could result in a few slick spots, if left untreated.
A dusting to less than an inch of snow will be possible through Thursday morning. The higher amounts will be west of US-23. Eastside communities, such as Harper Woods and St. Clair Shores will pick up little to no accumulation. The better chance of snow sticking will be on the grass, decks, and cars. Any snow that does accumulate will melt as temperatures rise into the lower 40s on Thursday. The falling snow could reduce visibility at times.
Commuters should allow extra time.
Besides snow showers and cold air temperatures, the wind will add a chill to the air on Thursday. Winds will be out of the southwest at 5 to 15 mph. Peak gusts will be up to 20 mph. Plan for wind chill values to be in the 20s in the morning and 30s in the afternoon.
Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a couple of rain and snow showers. Lows will be in the lower 30s.
Plan for rain showers on Friday with a greater chance in the afternoon and evening. Highs will be in the mid 40s. Breezy conditions will continue with winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph.
The cool weather will continue through the weekend.
Saturday and Sunday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the mid to upper 40s. A stray shower will be possible on Saturday, mainly near the Lake Huron shoreline.
