Will the snow stick after Metro Detroit’s first winter storm?

DETROIT – Metro Detroit is about to get its first snowfall of the season, but will any of it actually stick on the ground?

In short: No. That’s not what we’re expecting.

The 4Warn Weather team is forecasting a few stray snowflakes after sunset Wednesday, but that will be isolated. The more widespread scattered snowfall will arrive around 3-4 a.m. Thursday.

It’ll persist into midday and should end by lunch. Overall, scattered pockets of snow will roll through -- nothing intense.

But the ground isn’t frozen yet. In fact, surface and road temperatures are still in the 40s. So this wet snow isn’t expected to stick around for long.

Metro Detroiters won’t need to break out the shovels this week, and by the time you wake up Friday morning, you probably won’t see any snow at all.

Rain is in the forecast for Friday, and highs will be in the 40s for the weekend. So this snow isn’t going to stick.

Most of Metro Detroit is expected to get well under a half-inch of snow in total, and only areas west of U.S. 23 have much of a chance to get anywhere close to an inch.

The primary concerns from this storm are visibility and wet roads for the Thursday morning commute. This is likely to be more of a traffic event than a weather event.

Set your alarm clock early for Thursday to give yourself more time. It’s the first snowfall of the season, after all, so driving conditions will be tricky.
