DETROIT – Metro Detroit is in for some snow over the next 24 hours, but how much should we expect and when will it be the strongest?
Wednesday morning
Light snow hit the Thumb region on Wednesday morning, and that was mostly north of I-69.
Those snow showers could bring anything from a dusting to a half-inch of accumulation.
It was a windy start, with feels-like temperatures below the teens.
Wednesday afternoon
It’ll be mostly cloudy during the day Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-30s as winds pick up.
The daylight hours will be relatively dry, with only a few snowflakes flying.
Wednesday night
An arctic front passes through the region on Wednesday night, and that comes with brief, intense snow showers.
The heaviest band of snow is expected to arrive between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Some of the snow showers will drop quick accumulations and greatly affect visibility for drivers.
These “snow squalls” can create whiteout conditions very suddenly, so be careful on the roads Wednesday night.
During the night and into Thursday, west/northwest winds will gust between 35-45 mph and wind chills will plunge into the single digits by the morning.
Snow totals by Thursday morning
By Thursday morning, snowfall totals of 1-2 inches are possible. Accumulation will be even lower along the state line, but higher in the Thumb.
Isolated areas could see more than 2 inches if there are repeated snow squalls.
Depending how much road crews can clear overnight, there will likely be slick spots during the Thursday morning commute, especially on side roads and elevated surfaces.
Here’s Ashlee breaking down the forecast and timeline:
Rest of the week
We’ll dry out later on Thursday, and temperatures will turn frigid Friday morning, with lows in the teens and single-digit wind chills.
But temperatures will rise into the 40s by Sunday and into early next week, with rain chances back on Monday.
