DETROIT – There’s a three-hour window when you’re most likely to see heavy snow Wednesday in Metro Detroit.

Light snow flurries began Wednesday morning in Southeast Michigan and the Thumb, but the heaviest bands of snow are expected much later in the day.

An arctic front is passing through the region Wednesday night, and it will bring brief, intense snow showers.

The 4Warn Weather team is only expecting about 1-3 inches of total snow accumulation throughout Wednesday and into Thursday morning, but a high percentage of that could fall in a short period of time, likely between 8 p.m and 11 p.m. Wednesday.

That opens up the possibility of snow squalls, which could create dangerous whiteout conditions for Metro Detroit drivers. These can happen very suddenly, so be prepared if you have to go out on the roads.

Wind gusts between 35-45 mph will also be an issue, and wind-chill temperatures will dive into the single digits by Thursday morning.
