Snow expected across Michigan Wednesday. Here’s what to know

Snow totals forecasted for different areas of the state

After last week’s snow that crossed Michigan, lake effect snow is in the forecast for much of the state Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Here’s everything to know about how much snow is expected in different areas of the state and when to expect it.

Several counties are under winter storm watches, starting Tuesday evening, through Thursday evening. For a breakdown of each alert, visit here.

Snow forecast for Metro Detroit

Light snow showers are possible overnight with lake effect snow throughout the day on Wednesday. Accumulations are possible in some areas with 1 to 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service Detroit.

Snow squalls are also possible again, which could cause dangerous driving conditions as visibility is compromised due to whiteout-like conditions.

By Thursday morning, some areas will have 3 to 4 inches of snow.

What is lake effect snow?

As much of the state is expected to get lake effect snow, here’s an explanation of what that means.

Lake effect snow happens when cold air moves across warm water, and is common in Michigan due to the Great Lakes.

“As the cold air passes over the unfrozen and relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, warmth and moisture are transferred into the lowest portion of the atmosphere,” the National Weather Service said. “The air rises, clouds form and grow into narrow band that produces 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more.”

What are snow squalls?

Another term often used in the winter weather forecast for Michigan is “snow squall.”

A snow squall is an intense, heavy burst of snow that causes a decrease in visibility. These sudden whiteout conditions cause dangerous driving conditions, and drivers are encouraged to avoid traveling during them if possible.

Snow forecast for West Michigan

Snow will make its way through the Grand Rapids area Tuesday night, and intensify on Wednesday.

The weather service warned drivers that commutes may be impacted Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Some areas in this region have the chance for 4+ total inches of snow.

Snow forecast for Gaylord area

Lake effect snow will impact the area Tuesday night and last through Thursday.

The National Weather Service Gaylord says there are chances for at least 8 inches of snow in some areas in Northern Lower Michigan from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Drivers should be cautious as the snow could cause reduced visibility and snow-covered roads.

Snow forecast for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

From Tuesday night through Wednesday night, the Upper Peninsula is expected to get several inches of snow, with nearly a foot of snow possible for some areas.

Freezing drizzle was reported across the area Tuesday morning according to the National Weather Service Marquette, and drivers were warned to be cautious of slippery road conditions.
