Rain, snow mix likely in Metro Detroit with more snow on the way later this week

DETROIT – It’s a cloudy and cooler start to your morning with a rain/snow mix on the horizon.

We are anticipating a brief window of light, wet snow this morning. Snow may mix with rain across our southern areas. Minor slushy accumulation, if any, is possible. Otherwise, a cloudy afternoon is ahead with a few scattered flurries later this evening. Highs will be in the upper 30s.

Sunset is at 5:03 p.m.

We are keeping a close eye on the potential for accumulating snow starting late Thursday (mainly north of I-69) and continuing Thursday night/Friday that will be widespread.

There will be two phases with this next this Clipper system:

  1. The first phase being a light accumulating snow, mainly in our northern communities (north of I-96) Thursday afternoon between 1pm-6pm. A southerly flow of dry air will limit any accumulation for Metro Detroit and our southern communities most of Thursday evening.
  2. The second phase of this system will bring a broader area of snow after midnight through Friday morning as a low pressure system moves over the region. This will be our main snowmaker bringing accumulating snow that will peak around the morning commute, with approximately 1-2″ of new snow accumulation possible by midday and localized areas around 3″

**It is worth noting that not all models are in agreement and any change in placement of the low pressure will affect snowfall amounts on Friday, so we will be fine-tuning this forecast over the next 48 hours. Keep checking back with your 4Warn weather team for updates. However, at this point we have issued a 4Warn Weather Alert for Friday morning due to the impact this system will likely have on the morning commute.

After this, temperatures tumble through the weekend with highs in the 20s and single digit wind chills likely. We will start a warming trend heading into Christmas. We will have to see if the Friday snow sticks around with highs possibly reaching the mid to upper 30s on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
