DETROIT – Metro Detroit is expected to get at least 1-3 inches of snow over the next day or so, and the timeline of that snowfall is coming into focus.
Dusting: Thursday evening and afternoon
Some accumulating snow is on the way Thursday afternoon and evening, with the first wave likely arriving between 4-10 p.m.
By midnight, about a half-inch of snow will have fallen.
1-3 inches: Overnight into Friday morning
The snow will start to stack up overnight into Friday morning.
Specifically after midnight and through the Friday morning commute, Metro Detroit will see 1-3 inches of snow accumulation.
The timing of that snowfall will make for a tricky morning commute, with snow-covered roads and possible visibility issues.
A 4Warn Weather alert has been issued for Friday morning.
Scattered snow: Friday afternoon and evening
Models are showing scattered snow bands lasting into Friday afternoon and evening.
Higher snow accumulations of 3-4 inches are possible in spots where lake-effect bands set up.
Will snow stick around?
Much colder air is moving in for the weekend, with daytime highs in the 20s and single-digit wind chills possible at night.
But a warming trend takes us toward Christmas, so we’ll see if the Friday snowfall sticks around. Highs could reach the upper 30s on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
A few more snow showers are possible later on Monday, according to long-range data. But as temperatures rise, some cold raindrops could also mix in.
