4Warn Weather Alert: Snow & wintry mix moves into the region looking ahead into Monday

A few areas could see a brief changeover to rain as this cold front moves through Monday night

4Warn WeatherWINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: Has been issued for most of Southeastern Michigan from 12:00 PM Monday until 1:00 AM Tuesday (10:00 PM Monday in our M-59 Corridor Counties) for a wintry mixed precipitation and accumulating snow depending on where you are across the region. This will impact holiday travel as we work throughout a good part of our Monday.

MONDAY: Cloudy skies; wintry mix and snow developing late morning and into the afternoon. Snow accumulation possible along with sleet and some freezing rain in other areas as temperatures warm. Areas closer to the state line may see a brief changeover to rain before changing back to wintry weather as temperatures drop. High: 35; temperatures remaining near the freezing mark in our northern communities. Winds: South 5-15 MPH with gusts as high as 20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Wintry mix and snow ending near or shortly after midnight. Low: 32.

TUESDAY (CHRISTMAS EVE): Mostly cloudy skies. High: 37.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy skies. Low: 29.

WEDNESDAY (CHRISTMAS DAY): Mostly cloudy skies. High: 38.

As we start the holiday week, we are looking at a little bit of a wintry mess moving into the region, and depending on where you are at will depend on what you see, here’s the breakdown of what you can see depending on where you live:

ALONG & NORTH OF M-59: These areas should stay primarily snow for this evening, with the exception of a little sleet/mix possible near M-59 this afternoon/evening. These areas could see 2 to 4 inches of snow with areas up near Saginaw and into the thumb potentially seeing 3 to 5 inches of snow.

ALONG & SOUTH OF M-59 to I-696/I-94 CORRIDOR: These areas could start off as snow before changing to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and potentially some freezing rain. Areas from M-59 to I-696 could see 1 to 2 inches of snow, then changing over to some sleet and freezing rain where there could be pockets of sleet and ice accumulation in some areas.

SOUTH OF I-94 CORRIDOR: These areas will start off as snow, then quickly change over to a wintry mix, then areas in Eastern Wayne County and portions of Monroe County may see a changeover to rain for a period of time before changing back over to the wintry mix and then snow as this system moves out of the region. An inch or less of snow is expected with a light accumulation of sleet and freezing rain possible.

The wintry mix and snow will wind down it here or after midnight tonight, and we will keep the cloud cover into the forecast overnight tonight. Overnight lows, remaining around the freezing mark and early on Tuesday morning.

Looking ahead into Tuesday, the cloud cover sticks around as we head throughout the day, and the warming trend starts to move into the region. High temperature is heading for the upper 30s by Tuesday afternoon.

Cloud cover sticks around through Christmas Day on Wednesday and into Thursday as temperatures will continue to warm up. High temperatures remaining into the upper 30s on Wednesday, and heading for the lower 40s by the time we get to Thursday.

Our next chance of rain moves into the region late Friday night and looking ahead into the upcoming weekend thanks to another area of low pressure and a frontal boundary heading our way. But the warm-up continues, high temperatures heading into the lower 40s by Friday, then the upper 40s for Saturday and Sunday with rain showers likely both days.
