Springlike weather continues as rain returns to Metro Detroit

Snow chances to develop with midweek cooldown in Southeast Michigan

Metro Detroit is getting a taste of spring in late December.

That springlike weather includes both above-normal temperatures and rain. Following Saturday’s high of 58 degrees–several degrees short of the record of 64 degrees–at Detroit Metro Airport, temperatures will fall into the 40s at night. Lows will range from the upper 30s in the Thumb to the lower 40s in Metro Detroit.

Clouds will increase, and a few spots will develop light, patchy fog late. Widespread rain will approach from the south after 3 a.m.

Sunday

It will be a rainy and breezy start and end to Sunday. Along with a possible rumble of thunder, the rain will lead to ponding on roadways and sidewalks. Highs will range from 45 to 50 degrees. Expect the milder temperatures near Detroit and the lower temperatures along and north of the I-69 corridor. Winds will be northeasterly at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

The rain and wind will continue into Sunday night with daylong rain totals around an inch. There is a chance of wet snow mixing in at times. Lows will be in the lower to mid 30s. Winds will be out of the northwest and west around 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

A gale watch will go into effect for Southern Lake Huron at 10 p.m. Sunday and last until Monday night.

Monday

Monday morning will be mostly cloudy with a few sprinkles and flurries. Otherwise, clouds will decrease during the day. Highs will be in the mid 40s. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Tuesday

Tuesday, or New Year’s Eve, will bring a chance of rain with highs around 40 degrees. The wet weather will stick around for evening celebrations with a chance of rain and snow showers. Lows will be in the lower 30s around the freezing mark.

In New York, it will be rainy with evening temperatures in the upper 40s as spectators wait for the Times Square Ball Drop.

Wednesday

Wednesday, or New Year’s Day, will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a few snow showers in Southeast Michigan. Highs will be in the mid 30s. Under cloudy skies, nighttime temperatures will fall into the lower to mid 20s.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday and Friday will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a few lake-effect snow showers. Highs will be around 30 degrees on Thursday and the mid to upper 20s on Friday.
