Weather Whiplash: Cold weekend in Metro Detroit before mild, rainy weather returns

March is beginning with sharply colder weather.

February ended with a high of 55 degrees at Metro Airport on Friday. While the temperatures were still in the 30s after midnight early Saturday morning, daytime temperatures were stuck in the 20s.

Saturday night’s temperatures will dip into the teens in Southeast Michigan. Lows will be around 16 in Metro Detroit and 10 to 14 degrees in Ann Arbor and the Thumb. Nighttime wind chills will be around 10 degrees in Detroit and single digits west of I-275 and north of I-696. Northwesterly winds will be 5 to 15 mph. Skies will be partly cloudy, but a few flurries will be possible.

Sunday

Sunday will be another cold day, but expect sunshine with partly cloudy skies. It will feel like the teens or lower through the morning in Metro Detroit. Afternoon highs will be in the lower 30s, but wind chills will be in the lower to mid 20s. Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday night will be partly cloudy. Lows will be in the upper teens to 20 degrees.

Monday

A warm front will usher milder air into Southeast Michigan on Monday. It will be mostly sunny in the morning, but clouds will increase during the day. Highs will be around 40 degrees, which is normal.

By night, it will be mostly cloudy. A few sprinkles or flurries will be possible. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Tuesday

Tuesday will introduce warmer air and the return of widespread rain. While there is a chance of morning showers, the evening will be rainy across Southeast Michigan. Highs will be in the mid 40s to 50 degrees.

The rain will continue into Tuesday night. Mild lows will be in the lower to mid 40s.

Wednesday

As the system drifts across the Great Lakes region and strengthens, it will bring more rain and gusty winds to Southeast Michigan on Wednesday. Highs will be in the mid 50s.

The rain will be likely in the evening, and rain and snow will be possible at night. Lows will be in the mid 20s to 30 degrees.

Thursday

It will be mostly cloudy with a chance of flurries on Thursday. Highs will range from 35 to 40 degrees. The warmer locations will be near Detroit.

Friday and Saturday

Drier weather is expected for Friday and Saturday. Highs will be in the mid 30s to lower 40s.
