Metro Detroit cooldown comes with days of rain chances -- Here’s what to expect

4Warn Weather – May begins with temperatures closer to normal after a weather rollercoaster to end April.

Metro Detroit set a new record high on Tuesday, April 29. It reached 86 degrees, which bested a record that had stood since 1899.

Wednesday’s high was only 63 degrees, but temperatures have returned to the 70s to end the workweek.

Friday will end with mostly cloudy skies. Overnight lows will fall to the lower to mid-40s. There will be a chance of a few sprinkles overnight, but primarily east of I-75.

Northwesterly winds will be 5 to 10 mph and become northeasterly overnight.

Saturday

Saturday will be cooler and mostly cloudy. A stray shower will be possible, but the slight chance will be mainly east of I-75.

Most of Metro Detroit will remain dry. Highs will be 50 to 60 degrees in most of Southeast Michigan.

Temperatures will be near 60 degrees in Detroit and around 50 degrees in Sandusky and Port Huron. Northeasterly winds will be around 10 mph.

Saturday night will be mostly cloudy, with lows in the lower to mid-40s.

Sunday

Sunday will bring a better chance of rain. Showers will be possible in the morning and likely in the afternoon and evening.

Highs will be in the mid- to upper-50s. Northeasterly winds will be 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

This means that showers could dampen Southwest Detroit as it hosts the 60th Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade on Sunday.

Sunday night will be rainy, with lows in the upper-40s to 50 degrees.

Monday

Monday, Cinco de Mayo, will be mostly cloudy with rain showers. Highs will be in the mid-60s, and lows will be in the lower 50s.

Tuesday

Tuesday will also be rainy, with temperatures peaking in the mid-60s. Lows will be in the lower 50s.

Wednesday

Wednesday will be partly cloudy, but a few sprinkles cannot be ruled out early. Highs will return to the lower 70s, and lows will be in the upper 40s.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday and Friday will be partly cloudy to mostly sunny, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Looking Ahead

May begins with average highs and lows in the mid-60s and mid-40s, respectively. By the end of the month, average highs are in the mid-70s and average lows in the mid-50s.

The outlook for May leans toward slightly warmer than normal temperatures.
