Strong to severe thunderstorm chances return tonight in Metro Detroit -- What to know

Warmer and humid conditions build throughout your Thursday

DETROIT – Make sure you are severe weather-ready before you go to bed tonight meaning don’t have your phone on silent and make sure you are allowing push notification for weather alerts from our 4Warn Weather App. You can also utilize a NOAA weather radio because you can’t always count on hearing outdoor sirens from indoors.

Another mild morning to kickstart a warmer and more humid day. Plan for mainly clear skies during the daytime hours. The only exception is right along the state line this morning where showers drape Northwest Ohio. High temperatures will top out on either side of 80 this afternoon. We have issued a 4Warn Weather Alert for tonight as we are keeping a close eye on the potential for a line of strong to severe storms that will likely track across lower Michigan.

This is what you need to know:

  • All of Southeast Michigan is under a slight risk (Level 2/5) for severe weather tonight.
  • The timeline: A line of strong to severe thunderstorms will track through the region between 10 pm and 3 am. Storm motion will be from southwest to northeast at 45 mph.
  • The threats: Primarily large hail and damaging winds, although a tornado and localized flooding (with heavy rainfall) cannot be ruled out.

Tomorrow

Warm again Friday as sunshine returns and highs soar back into the 80s, although likely less humid as a drier air mass begins to briefly build in and a little breezy. However, another round of showers and thunderstorms will be possible Friday night with a secondary cold front.

Weekend

Pre-dawn showers are likely on Saturday followed by breezy conditions. Cooler weather is expected through the weekend. Highs will be in the seasonal upper 60s, struggling to reach 70.

Next Week

Slightly cooler than average with a stretch of 60s. Rain chances return midweek.
