Fireworks spectators brave ‘extreme heat’ in downtown Detroit

Extreme Heat Warning in effect for part of Southeast Michigan

DETROIT – Record temperatures are not stopping people from celebrating Independence Day and Canada Day along the Detroit River.

Michelle Hannah, of Detroit, said she is not a fan of the heat, but she arrived at Hart Plaza in the morning prepared.

“My cooler is stocked with water,” she explained. “Loads of ice.”

Elton Potts drove up from Toledo with family, umbrellas, and lots of bottled water.

He said his plan involves “staying relaxed and comfortable.” We have a spot under a tree as well that we always go for. So, we’re just waiting for some of our other fireworks friends to show up.”

The scorching temperatures also showed up. An Extreme Heat Warning was in effect due to the risk of heat index values over 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service was advising people to drink plenty of water and to stay out of the sun. Some people found other ways to cool off, such as getting drenched by Hart Plaza’s Dodge Fountain.

Apart from staying safe from the heat, people were thinking about public safety.

“And so, I have hundreds and hundreds of officers that will be here working with our federal partners and state partners to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison. “So, I expect this to be a safe event. We know how to do this.”

Bettison urged people not to lose their cool.

“Bring your patience,” he said. “It’s going to be hot. So, make sure you bring plenty of water. Try to stay away from those energy drinks and things of that nature.”

“Don’t sweat the small stuff,” Hannah added. “You’ll be okay. Bring a towel. Wipe the sweat off. You’ll be okay.”

Despite the temptation to take tents and canopies to Hart Plaza, police said to keep them at home. Pets, alcohol, firearms, and drones were also on the list of banned items.
