  • Cooler Friday: Temperatures reach only the upper 40s to 50 degrees, with breezy northwest winds.
  • Weekend improvement: Rain moves out by Saturday morning, setting the stage for a drier weekend with increasing sunshine.
  • Warm-up next week: Highs rebound to near 60 degrees Monday and the lower 60s Tuesday.

4Warn Weather — Metro Detroit’s weather has certainly changed since Election Day.

After enjoying unusually warm temperatures earlier this week, Southeast Michigan is settling back into a more typical November pattern.

The warmth has given way to cloudy skies, cooler air, and several opportunities for rain.

Showers returned Wednesday and continued into Thursday. And according to the latest forecast, the unsettled weather is not finished.

Another cold front moves through Thursday night, followed by a strengthening upper-level weather system that could bring additional showers Friday afternoon and Friday night.

But there is good news for weekend plans. Drier weather and sunshine are on the way, along with another warming trend.

Showers increase Thursday night

Showers become more widespread Thursday night as another cold front moves across Southeast Michigan.

For Metro Detroit, the best opportunity for rain arrives between midnight and 5 a.m.

Temperatures fall to around 40 degrees in Detroit, while some communities north and west of the metro could dip into the mid-30s.

Despite the colder air arriving, temperatures should remain warm enough for precipitation to fall as rain.

Friday brings another round of rain

Do not put the umbrella away just yet.

Friday looks chilly, mostly cloudy and breezy, with afternoon highs generally in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees.

Northwesterly winds could gust to around 20 to 25 mph, adding to the colder feel.

A powerful upper-level disturbance moving across the Great Lakes will help produce additional showers throughout Southeast Michigan.

Scattered to numerous showers are possible Friday afternoon as the weather system moves across southern Lower Michigan.

Another increase in shower coverage and intensity is possible Friday night as the system shifts east.

Not everyone will experience rain continuously, but periods of wet weather remain possible through the end of the workweek.

What should you wear Friday?

Friday calls for layers, a warmer jacket, and something to keep you dry.

A waterproof or water-resistant jacket with a hood may be especially useful for anyone spending time outdoors.

Closed-toe shoes that can handle wet pavement are also a good idea.

With temperatures near 50 and northwest winds increasing, conditions could feel considerably cooler than earlier this week.

If you are heading to work, school, or outdoor activities, plan for occasional showers and changing conditions throughout the day.

A brighter weekend ahead

The weather begins improving Saturday as the storm system moves east and drier air returns.

Saturday features a mix of clouds and sunshine, with afternoon temperatures near 52 degrees.

Northwest winds remain breezy, with gusts potentially reaching 20 to 25 mph.

Saturday night turns chilly, with temperatures falling into the 30s. Some outlying communities could approach freezing.

Sunday offers even better weather for outdoor plans.

Mostly sunny skies and afternoon highs in the upper 50s will make for a more pleasant finish to the weekend.

Whether you are planning yard work, a fall walk, or cheering on the Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, Sunday looks like the better day for sunshine and milder afternoon temperatures.

Another warmup next week

The return of sunshine also helps temperatures rebound early next week.

Highs climb to around 60 degrees Monday and 62 degrees Tuesday, several degrees above the average for early November.

The latest forecast favors a stretch of dry weather through the middle of next week.

Veterans Day on Wednesday looks mostly sunny, with highs in the mid- to upper 50s.

So while Metro Detroit may need umbrellas and warmer jackets to finish the workweek, the chilly, wet weather will not last long.

Another round of sunshine and temperatures near 60 degrees is already on the horizon.
