Say goodbye to summer

No description found

DETROIT – Astronomical fall officially began at 10:21 a.m. Thursday, and right on schedule, a significant pattern change is on the way that’ll end our run of mid-summer temperatures and humidity and bring cooler temperatures that are more typical of a Michigan fall.

Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies overnight, with lows in the mid-60s, or 18 degrees Celsius for our Canadian neighbors. There will be a light and variable wind.

Friday will bring mostly cloudy skies as a cold front slowly slips through the area. Scattered showers are possible the entire day, although I think the best chance will be in the afternoon into the evening. Highs will be in the mid-70s (24 degrees Celsius). A north wind will blow at 5 to 10 mph.

Friday’s sunrise is at 7:22 a.m., and Friday’s sunset is at 7:28 p.m. There will be mostly cloudy skies Friday night with a few showers still possible. Lows will be in the mid-50s (14 degrees Celsius).

It will be mostly cloudy on Saturday, and it looks like it will be a mostly dry day, though there's a very slight shower chance first thing in the morning. Our afternoon football games should be dry. Highs will reach near 70 degrees (21 degrees Celsius).

It will become mostly clear Saturday night, with lows in the low to mid-50s (12 degrees Celsius).

It will be partly cloudy on Sunday, with highs in the low 70s (22-23 degrees Celsius). Sunday night will be partly cloudy, with lows in the upper 50s (15 degrees Celsius).

Monday will bring Increasing clouds as a slow-moving cold front approaches. Showers are possible at some point in the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid-70s (23 degrees Celsius).

The long-range computer models differ considerably in the jet stream pattern for the middle of next week. Some models (such as the ECMWF) keep the pattern progressive, and race the cold front through. Others (such as the GFS) are much slower, allowing unsettled weather to hang around all the way into Wednesday.

What does appear certain is that we’re in for an extended period with average fall temperatures -- highs in the low 70s (22 degrees Celsius), and lows in the mid-50s (13 degrees Celsius).
