Severe Weather Alert: Large hail, isolated tornado possible Thursday in SE Michigan

Thunderstorms will redevelop this afternoon

DETROIT – Thunderstorms will redevelop this afternoon, and our severe threat has not changed: large hail, damaging wind gusts, and even a tornado are possible.

NEW: Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for several SE Michigan counties

The most likely time to see severe storms is between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.  Accordingly, we have declared a Severe Weather Alert for this afternoon due to the widespread severe threat.  I strongly urge you to stay close to Local 4, ClickOnDetroit.com, and our Local4Casters app today.

Ben Bailey and Brandon Roux will be here all afternoon, and keep you updated with the latest information as the storms develop and move our way.  Early evening plans, such as little league practice, will likely be impacted, so keep this in mind and perhaps start thinking about alternate arrangements.

We're also keeping an eye on possible power outages.

Highs today should reach the low to mid 70s (22-23 degrees Celsius), with 60s (16+ degrees Celsius) eventually for the Thumb later today as a warm front tries to make it up your way.  Southwest wind at 15 to 25 mph.

If you haven’t done so already, make sure you download the FREE Local4Casters app -- it opens right to our customizable radar page -- you’ll definitely want to track the weather as it develops today.  Again, it’s FREE, and you can find it in the app store -- just search under WDIV.

Today’s sunrise is at 6:44 a.m., and today’s sunset is at 8:21 p.m.

After the storms end early this evening, becoming partly cloudy overnight, with lows in the mid 40s (8 degrees Celsius).
