Firefighters pulled the dog from the Huron River just before noon on Friday.

Officials said the animal was retrieved from the water and was attempted to be resuscitated but later died.

“Thank you to the BluePearl Pet Hospital for their extraordinary efforts,” the Ann Arbor Fire Department wrote on social media. “This is the second incident in two years where a dog went out onto the ice along the Huron River and fell in. Please keep dogs on a leash when around water, especially this time of year with unstable ice conditions.”

Department officials noted that ice on the Huron River, and anywhere around the city, is not afe due to warmer winter temperatures and recent rain.

The City of Ann Arbor requires dogs to be on a leash when walking with their owners, when in public places or in vehicles. Dogs who are 6 months or older must be licensed with the city and wearing their tag, or the owner can receive a violation.
