A tragedy happened in the Huron River after teenager Alex Walker jumped off a bridge and drowned, prompting a new warning from the Ann Arbor Fire Department. Walker was just a sophomore in high school who was with a larger teen group Wednesday (May 11).

University of Michigan employee knocked out in parking garage, wakes up to find car on fire
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ A University of Michigan employee was knocked unconscious in a parking structure over the weekend and woke up to find his car on fire, police said. The Michigan Medicine staff member said he was assaulted around 7:50 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 6) on the fifth floor of the P1 parking garage on West Medical Center Drive in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor firefighters arrived and put out the fire. AdU of M police and Ann Arbor firefighters are investigating the incident. Parts of the parking structure are closed for safety inspections, officials said.
Ann Arbor Fire Department saves 120-year-old downtown building
ANN ARBOR โ Quick response from the Ann Arbor Fire Department saved a downtown building on Tuesday, according to Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy. The 120-year-old building was built with balloon framing, which features multiple void spaces on the structureโs upper levels. According to Kennedy, these spaces allow fire to spread rapidly. โThere were a lot of void spaces and multiple roofs.โLocated just blocks from the Ann Arbor Fire Station, firefighters were able to aggressively respond to stop the fire from spreading. Located next to the Delonis Center, Washtenaw Countyโs homeless shelter, Ann Arbor Police believe that homeless individuals may have unintentionally started the blaze in the carport area.
Longtime Ann Arbor firefighter passes away after battling cancer
ANN ARBOR โ Retired training officer with the Ann Arbor Fire Department, Craig Sidelinger, passed away on Monday morning after a nearly two-year battle with colon cancer. Sidelinger joined AAFD as a firefighter in 2000. He held the position for 10 years before advancing to training officer -- a role he also held for 10 years. According to AAFD, Sidelinger was the longest-serving training officer in the department. โHe also helped teach public outreach such as Safety Town, Ann Arbor Ready, and the City Citizenโs Academy.
Ann Arbor firefighters respond to massive house fire over weekend
ANN ARBOR โ Members of the Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to a house fire on Saturday just after 8:30 a.m. According to a Facebook post by the department, the firefighters battled a blaze on Miller Ave. just east of M-14. A second alarm brought in fire departments from Pittsfield Township, Scio Township, Saline Area and Ann Arbor Township. Ann Arbor Police Department, Huron Valley Ambulance and Helping Area Response Teams provided assistance on the scene. This is the third second alarm structure fire in Ann Arbor in 2020.
Ann Arbor Fire Department hiring for fire recruit position
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ The Ann Arbor Fire Department is looking to fill the open position of Fire Recruit. For the first time in 15 years, AAFD is hiring untrained applications to become firefighters and EMTs, according to a Facebook post. The Fire Recruit will attend fire academy and EMT classes; help with administrative and clerical duties; assist with safety education, community and recruitment events; and maintain departmental equipment, buildings and grounds, among other related duties. The position pays $18 per hour and comes with additional benefits including paid vacation time, sick days, a city matched 401(a) plan, tuition reimbursement and healthcare plans. Ann Arbor Fire Department begins exercises in South University buildings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Pedestrians walking along South University Avenue shouldnโt be concerned if they see a bit of smoke and firefighters moving in-and-out of buildings over the next few weeks. Starting Tuesday, and continuing through October, Ann Arbor Fire Department will turn the unused buildings between East University Avenue and Church Street into training grounds to practice different exercises. The buildings on that block of South University Avenue will be demolished soon, so they provide a unique opportunity for the fire department to practice, according to Fire Chief Mike Kennedy of the Ann Arbor Fire Department. The block is the former location of a PNC Bank, South U Pizza, several eateries, apartments and other shops. Once the buildings are demolished, Hughs Properties will build Vic Village South, a mixed-use building, on the block.
Former Ann Arbor fire chief accused of stealing from fund used when firefighter, police officer dies
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A former chief at the Ann Arbor Fire Department is facing charges after money went missing from a fund used to support families of fallen fire fighters and police officers. Ollice "Chuck" Hubbard is charged with embezzlement involving the Ann Arbor police and Fire Benefit Fund. Hubbard, who served as the chief from 2011 until he retired in 2014, had full control of the fund. Officers and firefighters contribute to the fund each paycheck. Michigan State Police are still investigating how much money is missing.
