Detroit becomes NFL fan mecca as draft draws enthusiasts nationwide

NFL draft is Thursday night

DETROIT – NFL fans from around the country are flocking to Detroit for the NFL draft, including the Atlanta Falcons superfan BirdLady.

She was among the crowds landing at Detroit Metro Airport on Wednesday (April 24).

“I just want to pick up some good players. I really do,” Carolyn BirdLady Freeman said.

She said she never misses a Falcons game.

“The only colors I wear are black, red, white, silver, gray. My house is black, red, white, silver and gray. I have over 500 autographed helmets, footballs, jerseys. It’s a shrine,” Freeman said.

Emily Kasee, originally from Toledo, flew into town from Boston.

“I have been a Lions fan since I was younger, and the draft is in Detroit, so it’s a huge opportunity to come and see it,” she said.

With Detroit playing host to the draft and the Lions having an unbelievable run last season, even fans of other NFL teams are planning to show their love for the Lions.

“I am just excited for what the Lions are doing, even though I am a Vikings fan, to see the Lions finally doing great things, it’s exciting,” Minnesota Vikings fan Chase Kelly said.

Although the NFL draft is the main attraction, many said they are looking forward to seeing what Detroit has to offer.

“I have a lot of friends here who are big in development, and so seeing the new development going on here in Detroit,” Atlanta Falcons fan Normandie Stroter said.

Jacksonville Jaguars fan Amar Madyun was planning to hit the ground running.

“I’m going to be in the city. I’m not just here for the draft stuff. I’m going to go to the African American History Museum,” Madyun said.
