Amazon is reporting increased profits and net sales during its fiscal first quarter, helped by surging growth in its prominent cloud computing unit.

Amazon announced what it called a “major expansion” of its partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI on Tuesday, a day after the artificial intelligence company said it was loosening its ties to longtime backer Microsoft.

OpenAI executives say they will introduce a new artificial intelligence model for “high-value professional work” as the company faces heightened competition with rival Anthropic in attracting corporate customers to adopt AI assistants in their workplaces.

OpenAI and Anthropic, the startups behind ChatGPT and Claude, are gearing up for a major showdown.

OpenAI has appointed Slack CEO Denise Dresser as its first chief of revenue.
