Family of child found wandering in Southgate street wearing diaper located

Police issued a statement on Facebook about locating his parents

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – Police said the family of the child found wandering alone wearing a diaper in the roadway in Southgate has been located.

Officers with the Southgate Police Department were dispatched about 4:15 p.m. on Monday, May 18, to the area of Fort Street and Netherwood Street after a passerby reported the little boy in the road wearing only a diaper.

Police said a concerned passerby safely took the child into her vehicle until they arrived.

The child is described as a Black boy believed to be about two to four years old.

Police said he was not able to communicate with officers.

Officers said they searched the surrounding area for the child’s parent or guardian but were unable to locate anyone until Monday night, and no matching missing-child reports had been filed as of Monday afternoon.

The boy was taken to the Southgate Police Department, where he was safe and being cared for.

Child Protective Services had been notified and was assisting with the investigation.
